Graston Technique in Calgary

Graston Technique is a soft-tissue therapy that uses patented stainless steel instruments to detect and treat scar tissue and adhesions within and between layers of soft tissues throughout the body. At Encompass, we have the best experts who can offer Graston Technique in Calgary.

Benefits of Graston Technique

Graston® can be applied to muscles, ligaments, and tendons depending on the condition being treated. Graston® works to increase the blood flow to the tissue in question and to separate layers of tissue bound by pain-inducing, motion-limiting adhesions.

Graston® Technique is therapeutically beneficial for many conditions including but not limited to muscle strain and spasm, ligamentous sprains, and improvement of post-surgical scar mobility. Our chiropractors, physiotherapist, and our massage therapists all use Graston instruments as part of their treatments.

Conditions Treated With
Graston Technique

Hamstring Strain

Hamstring strains can cause significant pain and limitations. Graston is especially effective on the long, thicker muscles of the legs. Where other therapies aren’t able to get deep enough, Graston is able to apply pressure to layers of muscle both at the surface and deeper and can break adhesions that prevent the full healing of a hamstring or quadriceps strain.

Repetitive Strains

Graston can remove adhesions in muscles that are tight due to repetitive strain conditions, including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Rotator Cuff Injuries, Tennis Elbow, Golfer’s Elbow, and Achilles Tendonitis.

Low Back Pain

Low back pain is often caused by scar tissue in the core muscles of the lower back. To properly rehabilitate these muscles, blood flow must be restored so that they can activate and relax effectively and when called upon. Graston can help remove scar tissue in these muscles so that they have better circulation and increased endurance for core stabilization, which helps prevent the recurrence of low back pain.

Ankle Sprains

Graston is an effective tool in restoring proper circulation to a sprained ankle, as often swelling prevents proper flushing of the area.

Muscle Tightness

Graston works very well on the fascia, which is the covering between layers of muscle and different muscles that allows for glide. By loosing adhesions in the fascia, muscles are able to contract and relax more fully, which relieves muscular tension.

Post-surgical Scars

Following surgery, scarring can occur, as fibrosis between the skin, fascia, and muscle sets in. Graston is able to break adhesions between layers of tissue and allow fibroblasts to create new, longer muscle fibers in the area.

Reviews

"I had the pleasure of being treated by both Dr. Hawkins and Dr. Belding. They are very knowledgeable in a variety of different treatment modalities, and can explain each with the utmost confidence; from soft tissue to ART, Graston and Shockwave. They are more than accommodating in terms of booking an appointment. They will listen to what your expectations are( functionality, overhead sports as in my case) and to the best of their ability will try to reach that goal. Treatment did not stop at their clinic as they give helpful advice on what I could do on my own"

"Gaurangi is an incredible physiotherapist - thorough, efficient, compassionate and knowledgeable. I live nowhere near Cranston but she is well worth the drive! She always uses a variety of modalities to help and follows up with written stretches and/or strengthening activities. Today she spent time with me for a longstanding issue and completed a full assessment as well as mobilization, Graston therapy, suctioning, dry needling (IMS), and Class IV laser. In my opinion, the utilization of IMS and laser therapy is a game changer for physiotherapy treatment. I feel so much better already and I look forward to her wise and caring direction in order to fully heal."

FAQs on Graston Technique

Graston Technique is used to help alleviate tension in muscles and fascia. It is effective in restoring blood flow and motion to tight and overused muscles. Anyone with muscle aches or tension can benefit from Graston Technique.

At Encompass Sports Therapy, we use all-in-one pricing, meaning that you do not pay extra for Graston. No matter how many treatment techniques are used, or how many areas of the body are treated, patients still pay the same price.

Graston can be slightly painful, but a trained therapist knows how to apply Graston without causing too much discomfort. As Graston is breaking fascial adhesions, there can be some tenderness, but no more than with a deep tissue massage.

Graston Technique is covered by personal healthcare plans under the heading of whichever discipline is performing Graston. If our physiotherapist is performing Graston Technique, the treatment would fall under physiotherapy. If our chiropractor was performing Graston, then the treatment would be covered by chiropractic coverage.

All of our appointments are the same length, and we try to get in as much treatment as possible. In some sessions, multiple modalities might be used, and Graston might be a small piece of the treatment plan. In others, Graston might take up a larger share of the treatment time. In general, our chiropractic appointments are one on one for 15 minutes, while our physiotherapy appointments are one on one for 30 minutes.

At Encompass, our chiropractors, physiotherapists, and massage therapists, all can perform Graston technique.
