Carpal Tunnel Treatment in Calgary
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a condition in which the nerve that serves the palm of the hand, first three fingers, and thumb is compromised and compressed by a band of tissue on the inside of the wrist at an anatomical site referred to as the carpal tunnel. Symptoms of CTS include but are not necessarily limited to: pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and in severe cases wasting of the muscles of the affected fingers (the first three fingers and thumb). The cause of the compression of the nerve that results in CTS is not widely agreed upon. However, repetitive overuse, obesity, and pregnancy appear to be risk factors. Treatment for CTS focuses on releasing the nerve within the carpal tunnel. Conservative manual therapy can be very effective in the treatment of CTS and early intervention is key for the prevention of surgery becoming necessary.
Treatment options include: Active Release Techniques, Graston technique, and rehabilitation exercises.
